Website Maintenance Support and Management Training – Learn Digital Marketing
My name is Brian Mathers. In my 20 year career as someone who has a passion for helping businesses build and marketing successful websites and set you on the right path towards growing your business online, I have heard, (mainly from smaller business owners) that Internet Marketing and especially SEO is like a burden, like too much hard work. And doing PPC Pay Per Click Advertising using AdWords – forget it say many. And simply writing content for website pages – no chance I haven’t the time is what comes from lots of small business owners.
Website Support Services for Managers in Scotland and the UK
Since 1998 I have engaged with lots of small business owners across both Scotland and England where many of them have expressed they don’t like the idea of having anything to do with their website marketing. Nor do they want to be involved in how to keep their business website up to date. But if you opt to fly blind and not do any website marketing at all, or take the decision to leave all your online marketing efforts to a third party there can be limited sympathy when the business owner highlights there website has not worked since they implemented it and moan about no traffic and no sales from the website at all!
If you have opted to leave the website marketing with a 3rd party marketing agency or your freelance web developer, just how passionate are they going to be in marketing your business. What do they know about your business? Are they as passionate as you about what you offer by way of products or services?
I hope then that we both don’t disagree you will need help to market a website. This is probably why you are on this landing page, so you have made an important first step.
Learning to manage a website is no different to learning to drive a car or if you want to learn to fly a light plane. What do you do? You take lessons from a qualified driving instructor or pilot to become competent, and you need to pass some exams to be truly certified.
I know there are some FREE DIGITAL MARKETING WORKSHOPS available which you can attend. Most run for about 3 hours and some consider this to be a sufficient amount of website manager training needed, because admittedly a lot of stuff is covered inside that 3 hour workshop. You might walk out of that workshop with a spring in your step and say you know it all now and will be looking for success in a few days time. Wrong. You are going the wrong way about having a website, building a website and then think that marketing a website will see you be successful in days or a matter of weeks.
So, now do you understand just why lots of websites crash and burn, especially in the first year and why you and I are having this conversation via this website landing page?
Why Do Small Business Websites Fail?
I have seen lots of website failures. I am usually the person who turns up about a year to late. I don’t know how often I heard from the person who had responsibility for the website but having had no website manager training say, “I should have met you a year ago”. Because now a year has gone by, money was wasted because the business owner had no understanding of what it was exactly he or she was spending the money on when it came to that task of – my business needs a website!
And that is just the first step which usually involves the business owner calling a web developer or agency and saying I need a website. And unfortunately, this is going to hurt, you the business owner ends up hiring people who can’t really build websites. But let me add to that statement – hiring people who can’t really build websites that have to meet with the minimum coding and marketing guidelines. It is those two elements that are often overlooked. Because the web developer may have more of a programming background than having some marketing knowledge.
I once met with a Scottish based web design agency after being sent there by the business owner because his website was not working. He had no traffic no sales. On meeting the web agency I was told immediately at the start of the meeting, “please don’t talk to us about marketing, we are not interested, we only build websites!”
What you take from that is, don’t bother coming with a brief of your requirements, we just build what we know we can build by way of a website, take it or leave it. Or, you might meet an agency that says, “just give me your pictures and content and leave the rest to us.” Another danger recipe for disaster.
